Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) systems were rapidly deployed in the late 20th century in response to the increasing use of remotely activated explosive devices in warfare and terrorist attacks. Since then, C-IED systems have been widely used to prevent explosions and save lives.

Alaris COJOT has been involved in the development of a broad range of C-IED antennas for VHF, UHF, and SHF bands from the outset. These antennas are extensively used in the field.

The design and specifications of these antennas play a crucial role in determining the range and coverage of transmitted and received signals, directly impacting the overall effectiveness of the C-IED system.

Given the challenging environments in which C-IED operations take place—such as urban areas and conflict zones—antennas must be highly durable and capable of functioning under diverse conditions.

Counter IED comprises different activities where the antennas in use play a crucial role:

Communication: Antennas are essential for maintaining communication between C-IED units, command centers, and support teams. Reliable communication ensures coordinated operations and effective responses to threats.

Detection: Most C-IED systems utilise antennas as part of their sensor arrays to detect signals, including those transmitted by remote-controlled IEDs. These antennas can help identify threats from a distance.

Jamming: Antennas are crucial for electronic warfare systems that jam signals to prevent the detonation of remote-controlled IEDs (RCIED). A well-designed antenna ensures effective transmission of jamming signals over a wide area, enhancing the system's effectiveness.

Surveillance: Antennas used in surveillance systems can help collect intelligence on potential IED threats by enabling remote sensing and monitoring of areas of interest.

Applications and features

The Alaris COJOT C-IED antenna range supports the full frequency spectrum across applications including man-portable units for deployable on the ground systems, vehicle-mounted for convoy protection and VIP protection, and fixed-site platforms for key C-IED applications.

The excellent radiation properties, including for example OMNI azimuth flatness, power efficiency (VSWR) and robust design of the Alaris COJOT antennas, ensure predictable effective coverage for the transmitted and received signals, directly impacting the overall effectiveness of the C-IED system. The wide range of frequencies covering from 20MHz to 8GHz, along with power options of up to 400W, provide the user with a wide range of COTS/MOTS solutions to meet the requirements.
